BJSS Academy
Branding, identity, logo design, experience design, print design, merchandise
In 2019, I created a brand and identity for the BJSS Academy, a programme created to provide an entry pathway into BJSS for people from the widest possible backgrounds. It provided opportunities for graduates, apprentices, returners and career switchers, and helped BJSS employees develop different skills.
My brand was to be used for the first ever BJSS-wide Engineering Academy in September 2019, the theme for which was ‘The Pioneers’.
I created a distinctive logo to represent the different pathways within the Academy and BJSS’ joined-up services. I then adapted this for the five BJSS Academy programmes – Consultancy, Data, Design, Engineering, and Platform. For the brand, I developed a bold, playful colour palette and created an initial graphic asset, a low poly triangle pattern, to represent the never-ending possibilities of the BJSS Academy.
There was an area in the BJSS Leeds office that was to be used solely for the BJSS Academy. I designed vinyl graphics to fit the theme of ‘The Pioneers’. I ran the low poly triangle pattern across a long wall and window, an image of the moon across another wall, and created a life-size cardboard cutout of an astronaut, to bring the space to life.
I designed a stand and roller banners for the space and wider office. I sketched a couple of well-known tech pioneers in Adobe Illustrator, including Alan Turing and Ada Lovelace, to feature on some of the roller banners and on some social media graphics.
For each of the Engineering Academy cohort, I created a bespoke box containing branded merchandise and a brochure containing details of the programme.
Since 2019, there have been many more cohorts. Each year, I refreshed the brand and collateral in line with the theme chosen by the Academy team.
In 2021, the BJSS Academy was recognised for its work in ‘actively supporting women into the tech industry’ by the Princess Royal Training Awards.
The JobCrowd also ranked BJSS as one of the best companies in the UK for graduates to work at, which was based on feedback from the BJSS Academy alumni.
